Despite the snow still lingering on the ground, it鈥檚 springtime in Calgary and that means a 抖阴APP导航 springtime tradition is just around the corner: the Campus Cleanup and Barbecue.

The cleanup is an opportunity for everyone to take a break after the busy winter semester, get outside and make a positive impact as we help keep the 抖阴APP导航 campus green and clean.

鈥淏y coming together as a community to remove litter from campus grounds, we are taking ownership of our space and showing it is cared for while encouraging others to care for the space as well,鈥 says Steven Gasser, associate vice-president, facilities management.

鈥淥n April 27, I encourage everyone to join the Facilities team and campus community volunteers as we get outside and demonstrate our commitment to sustainability. It鈥檚 also a great opportunity to learn about 抖阴APP导航鈥檚 waste diversion and recycling programs.鈥

All 抖阴APP导航 students, faculty and staff, along with our community neighbours, are invited to participate in the ninth annual University of Calgary Campus Cleanup and Barbecue hosted by Facilities on Friday, April 27. Drop in anytime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Taylor Family Digital Library Quad. The barbecue begins at noon.

Join the Facilities team for a free barbecue in the TFDL Quad following the cleanup.

Last year, more than 50 teams made up of student, faculty and staff volunteers from across campus collected approximately 330 kilograms of trash, and found some odd trash and treasures along the way. Last year鈥檚 interesting finds included an overhead transparency from 13 years ago; not one, but two Santa hats; a coconut shell; and a shirt cuff with the cufflink still attached. All litter collected is recycled or sent to the landfill as appropriate.

See what you can unearth on April 27 鈥 there are prizes from the wackiest item collected, as well as for most litter collected, and door prizes. Advance registration gets you an extra ballot in the door prize draw.

Get outside, show your campus pride and help keep the University of Calgary campus green and clean!

The university diverts about 20 waste streams from the landfill. Help reduce waste year-round.
